Bridgerton is an adaptation of mostly the first book in a successful series of eight Regency romance novels by Julia Quinn. Taking place in the early part of the 19th century, the books follow the eight siblings in the Bridgerton family; this series is however an eight-episode drama, which premiered on Netflix.
The first season primarily revolved around the story of Daphne, the eldest Bridgerton daughter, as she enters the competitive marriage market. Daphne’s debut season gets off to a roaring start after she gains the favour of Queen Charlotte, making her the object of desire among men, but her brother Anthony soon started to push off the forthcoming prospects. Thus, leaving her feeling scared and unsure of her future. She comes up with a plan that involves the help of duke Simon who doesn’t want to get married and wants to keep the luring ‘mamas’ away agrees to pretend to court Daphne till she finds herself a suitable husband.
Among the others are the Featheringtons, and their three daughters who have also come out in this season. The Featheringtons however also, taken in a young relative named Marina who has a past of her own that is following her.
But the most interesting and rather the narration provider is the notorious writer who starts to publish sheets under the name of “Lady Whistledown.” Who somehow knows everything about everyone and soon starts to spill the beans of the various scandals in the town.
Amidst all this, the duke and Daphne soon start to develop real feelings. The queen and various others get hooked onto the daily dose of “Lady Whistledown” soon wanting to find out who the writer is and put a stop to this paper. A story well portrayed were women in the mid 19th century were coming to understand their stand in the society and of their independence. Of the importance of marriage and the covers, one keep from the society of broken marriages and bankruptcy or may it be accidental pregnancy, living under the pressure of class and society. Enticing and addictive the eight episodes left us wanting more.
