COVID-19 | Top 10 Global Developments This Morning

The global Covid-19 tally has crossed more than 108 million mark with the United States continuing to be the worst affected country, followed by India and Brazil. Around 2,382,880 deaths have been registered till now.

 

  1. The number of people, who have died of the coronavirus in Mexico, has risen by 1,474 to 171,234 within the past 24 hours, the national Ministry of Health said.
  2. The number of confirmed cases has increased by 10,677 to 1,968,566 within the same period of time. More than 1.52 million people have recovered since the start of the outbreak, according to the ministry.
  3. The number of COVID-19 related deaths in Africa has spiked as the continent grapples with local transmission of highly contagious strains of the virus, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Thursday.
  4. Russia registered 15,089 COVID-19 cases over the past 24 hours, up from 15,038 the day before, taking the tally to 4,042,837, the coronavirus response center said on Friday.
  5. “Over the past day, 15,089 coronavirus cases were confirmed across 85 regions, including 1,764 cases (11.7 per cent) that were detected actively, with people showing no clinical symptoms,” the center said, adding that the cumulative case count has now reached 4,042,837, with the rate of increase at 0.37 per cent. Moscow confirmed 2,139 new coronavirus cases over the given period, up from 2,040 the day before.
  6. The Russian capital was followed by St. Petersburg with 1,134 new cases, up from 1,127 the day before, and the Moscow Region with 842 new cases, up from 721 on Thursday.
    The response center reported 507 coronavirus fatalities, up from 553 the day before, raising the country’s death toll to 79,194.
  7. Malaysia reported 3,318 new COVID-19 infections, the health ministry said on Friday, bringing the national total to 258,306.
    Health Ministry Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a press statement that seven of the new cases are imported and 3,311 are local transmissions. Another 17 deaths have been reported, pushing the death toll to 953.
  8. Another 3,505 patients have been released after recovery, bringing the total cured and discharged to 205,774 or 79.7 per cent of all cases.
    Of the remaining 51,579 active cases, 258 are being held in intensive care units and 119 of those are in need of assisted breathing.
  9. The COVID-19 cases in Indonesia rose by 9,869 within one day to 1,201,859, with the death toll adding by 275 to 32,656, the Health Ministry said on Friday.
    According to the ministry, 11,000 more people were discharged from hospitals, bringing the total number of recovered patients to 1,004,117. The virus has spread to all the country’s 34 provinces.
    Specifically, within the past 24 hours, Jakarta recorded 3,810 new cases, East Kalimantan 931, East Java 776, West Java 683 and South Sulawesi 676.
  10. The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases across the African continent surpassed 3,715,923 cases as of Friday morning.
    According to the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), the number of cases reported in Africa accounted for about 3.5 percent of the global total. The agency also reported 97,299 COVID-19 deaths, with a case fatality rate of 2.6 percent and accounting for 4 percent of deaths reported globally.
