Petrol, Diesel Burn Hole In Pockets As Fuel Prices Skyrocket, Petrol Sells At Over Rs 94 In Mumbai

Date:

Fuel prices in India continue to soar with a litre of petrol costing more than Rs 90, whereas diesel has broken all records. Petrol and diesel prices were hiked all over the country on Friday for the fourth day in a row.

Now, people in Delhi will have to pay Rs 88.14 for a litre of petrol and Rs 78.38 for Diesel. In Mumbai, petrol prices stand at Rs 94.36 while diesel is retailing at Rs 84.94.

People across cities have raised the demand to the government to find out ways to reduce the prices.

“Today there is 70 percent tax on petrol and diesel in the form of a cess, excise, and value-added tax (VAT). I urge the government to reduce excise duty on petrol, diesel and also reduce VAT to make fuel affordable. Sales of petrol and diesel are also affected due to price increase. The government should bring petrol and diesel under GST (Goods and Services Tax) so that the prices will be under control,” said All India Petroleum Dealers Association President Ajay Bansal in Noida.

Commuters are facing difficulty in traveling due to the hike.

“I am spending Rs 150 daily on petrol. 40-50 percent of my salary gets spent on the fuel itself. The situation has worsened after the lockdown,” said a resident of Mumbai, Aman Nishkar.

Venkatesh Ravindra, another local said, “I have to travel a lot as it is an integral part of my job. People like me are the worst affected by the hike in fuel prices. Trains are not plying as usual because of the pandemic. So I travel on my own vehicle but the travel allowance will not cover the expense on fuel.”
“Centre and state should decrease their tax share. At least decrease a total of Rs 25,” said Amit who came to re-fuel his vehicle.

In Kolkata, the pump price of petrol was increased by 28 paise to Rs 89.44 a litre, from Rs 89.16 recorded on Thursday. Diesel costs Rs 81.96 a litre, 35 paise more than Thursday’s price.

In view of the rising prices, Assam Government removes COVID cess on petrol & diesel, now the prices will reduce by Rs 5 per litre.
