Days after farmers stormed the Red Fort, a picture collage started doing rounds on social media suggesting that an elderly man who attacked police personnel during the scuffle was beaten and injured.

A Facebook user shared the post with a caption, ‘बाबा जी की कम्बल ठुकाई क्या से क्या हो गए देखते देखते Before After’

(Translation: Look how the tables have turned, the old person got a good beating)

FACT CHECK

We fact-checked the post and found that the claim is fake.

When we ran a Reverse Image Search on both the pictures and found that while the ‘Before’ picture was taken on January 26, 2021, during the farmers’ agitation, the ‘After’ picture is old and was not taken after the violent clash.

Firstly, we ran a Reverse Image Search on the picture of the injured man which led us to a Facebook post by Kirti Kisan Union dated December 28, 2020.

According to the caption of the image, the incident happened when a tractor of some farmers who were going to join Delhi ‘Kisan Andolan’ from Kirti Kisan Union Unit had an accident near Khanna.

We also found a tweet by the general secretary of Shiromani Akali Dal, Bikram Majithia posted on December 27, 2020.

On digging further, we found that News 18 Punjab reported the incident on December 28, 2020. The headline of the report read, ‘Accident near Khanna of farmers going to join ‘Kisan Andolan’.(Translated)

According to the report, due to long journey and fog a tractor belonging to a farmer from Wadala village of Kirti Kisan Union, going to join Delhi ‘Kisan Andolan’, met with an accident near Khanna.

We ran another Reverse Image Search on the second picture and found the picture on Press Trust of India website with the caption, ‘A Nihang supporter of farmers clashes with police at Ghazipur border during their ‘Kisan Gantantra Parade’. (PTI)’.

Hence, based on the above information, we can say that the picture of the elderly man was not taken after the violent clashes on January 26, 2020.
