A message is being shared on social media with a claim that the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) will be banned in Maharashtra as the state will bring a proposal regarding the same in the state Assembly in March 2021.

A Facebook user shared the message with a Hindi caption, “‘महाराष्ट्र में EVM होगी बेन’
मार्च में लाया जाएगा विधानसभा मे प्रस्ताव धन्यवाद 🙏 उद्धव ठाकरे जी”

NewsMobile fact-checked the message and found it to be false.

We ran a Google search with some keywords and found some media reports which say Maharashtra is considering to frame a law to give electors the option of casting vote via ballot papers besides EVMs in some elections.

According to a News18 report, dated February 3, 2021, the state government may introduce a bill during the state assembly’s Budget Session, which is likely to start from March, regarding the same.

As per the article, Assembly Speaker Nana Patole has directed the Uddhav Thackeray government in the state to draft a bill for the reintroduction of ballot papers that will exist along with EVMs.

We found another news article by NDTV, which stated that Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Thursday (February 4) said the state cabinet will discuss and decide if a suggestion is made to it over framing a law to give electors the option of casting vote via ballot papers besides EVMs in some elections.

Hence, from the above information, it is clear that Maharashtra may introduce a bill to give electors the option of casting vote via ballot papers along with EVMs. Therefore, the message – Maharashtra to ban EVM – is false.
