Amidst the ongoing farmers’ protest, a video of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi opposing idea of farm loan waiver is being shared on social media.

“Loan of farmers’ should not be waived, or else farmers will make it a habit,” he can be heard saying in the video.

The video was being shared with the caption: किसान का कर्जा माफ नहीं करना चाहिए क्योंकि अगर किसान का कर्ज माफ किया तो किसान की आदत बिगड़ जायेगी !…

(Translation: The debt of farmers should not be forgiven, because if the debt of the farmer is forgiven, then the habit of the farmer will be spoilt)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the post and found the claim to be misleading.

While looking for viral posts on Facebook, we found that the same clip was shared back in 2018 also.

This gave us a clue that the video is old. We then ran a keyword search and found that it has been clipped out of the 47-minute video of Rahul Gandhi’s public rally in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh.

The original full video of Rahul Gandhi’s speech was posted on Congress’ official YouTube handle.

At 27:52 in the original video, Rahul Gandhi is saying: “Last year, the Indian government had waived off Rs 2.5 lakh crore debt of India’s top 15 industrialists but the same government which can forgive Rs 2.5 lakh crore for these fifteen people, cannot write off the debt of crores of farmers. Their leaders say that farmers’ loans shouldn’t be waived-off because if they are, farmers will get used to getting remittances. It’s a strange world, where the richest people in India won’t get used to their loan getting waived off.”

This proves that the viral video in circulation has been taken out of context and is being shared with a misleading claim.
