While I May Be The First Woman In This Office, I Will Not Be The Last : Kamala Harris

Date:

The woman of steel, 56 year old Kamala Harris who is the first Asian American and first African-American Vice-President elect of the United States says, she won’t be the last. Harris broke into the highest ranks of American politics and said every girl watching across the country now knows they can do so too. In her first speech as Vice-President elect on Saturday night in Delaware, Harris said, “While I may be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last.” She went on to say, “Because every little girl watching tonight sees that this is a country of possibilities.”

“And to the children of our country, regardless of your gender, our country has sent you a clear message: Dream with ambition, lead with conviction and see yourself in a way that others might not see you, simply because they’ve never seen it before. And we will applaud you every step of the way.” Said a strong willed Harris to the children of the country who are the future torch bearers.

These comments resonate with a video shot of Harris before the results were declared talking to her 4 year old great niece sitting on her lap, saying, “You could be president. You could be president, but not right now. You have to be over the age of 35.” The video captioned “You could be President” was shared by Harris’s niece Meena.

Harris’s mother and father emigrated from India and Jamaica respectively. She was raised biracial and interfaith. She is a Christian, but also attended Hindu temples with her mother. “I’m grateful to the woman most responsible for my presence here today, my mother, Shyamala Gopalan Harris. When she came here from India at the age of 19, she maybe didn’t imagine this moment. But she believed so deeply in America where moment like this is possible.” Said Harris in her Saturday speech.

“I am thinking about her and generations of women, black women, Asian, White, Latina, Native American women who throughout our nation’s history have paved the way for this moment tonight.” Added the Vice-Presidential elect.

Harris’s husband Doug Emhoff will be the first ever second gentleman and the first Jewish spouse. Emhoff who is an entertainment lawyer, has played an active role throughout Harris’s campaign and tweeted a picture of them hugging soon after the results.

Harris was out for a jog on Saturday morning, when results were declared and she went on to tweet a video of a call with her boss, Joe Biden stating, “We did it, we did it Joe! You’re going to be the next President of the United States!”

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Harris’s success as pathbreaking and said it is “a matter of immense pride not just for your chittis, but also for all Indian-Americans”.

Harris’s family from Tamilnadu in India would be flying to the US to attend the swearing-in ceremony.
