India Records Second Sharpest Dip In Weekly Coronavirus Cases

India recorded the second sharpest decline in weekly new coronavirus cases, with 16.6% fewer cases being reported this week in comparison to the previous seven days. Notably, this is the tenth consecutive week in which the country is seeing a decline in COVID-19 cases.

Between January 11 and 17, over 1,05,000 new coronavirus cases were reported, which is the lowest weekly tally since the third week of June (June 15 to 21). The last week (Jan 11-17) saw a drop of nearly 21,000 cases from the previous week’s count of nearly 1,26,043.

The weekly average of daily cases now stands at 15,020, down to just 16% of the peak in mid-September, as per a report by The Times Of India.

The weekly death toll also saw a sharp decline of 16.6% from the previous week’s count. India reported 1,259 deaths in the last week, while 1,509 fatalities were reported in the previous one. The average daily death toll has gone below 200 for the first time since mid-May, 2020. India has been seeing a decline in the number of deaths from six consecutive weeks, as per TOI.

India reported 13,970 fresh coronavirus cases on Sunday, around 1000 less than the previous day’s tally. While 145 deaths were also reported on Sunday. Notably, for the first time since May 22, less than 150 coronavirus-related fatalities were recorded on Sunday.
