A picture of a mass gathering is being shared on Facebook with a claim that people in France came out to protest against Coronavirus restrictions imposed by the authorities.

Here’s the link to the above post.

NewsMobile fact-checked the post and found the claim to be misleading and false.

A simple Reverse Image Search of the picture led us to multiple media reports from 2018 featuring the same image.

According to an article published in the Metro UK, the picture was taken in 2018, during the FIFA world cup celebration.

“Members of a huge crowd of fans light flares as they celebrate France beating Croatia (Picture: Getty),” the caption of the post read.

Since the picture was attributed to Getty, we checked for the original picture on the website of Getty Image.

The description read: This picture taken from the top of the Arch of Triumph (Arc de Triomphe) on July 15, 2018 shows people lighting flares as they celebrate after France won the Russia 2018 World Cup final football match against Croatia, on the Champs-Elysees avenue in Paris. We also checked the website of AFP as the original image was attributed to them.

Hence, from the above fact check, it is clear that the picture in circulation is OLD and has no relation with the Coronavirus restrictions.
