Even as rising petrol and fuel prices continue to burn a hole in the pockets of consumers, the Shivraj Singh Chouhan government in Madhya Pradesh is all set to add a new cess to fuel prices.
Madhya Pradesh government is planning to impose cow cess on fuel.
The proposal has been made by the animal husbandry department, citing that Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana already charge cow cess, as per reports.
The department has proposed to charge cow cess of 15 paise per litre on petrol and diesel and Rs 10 per cooking gas cylinder.
The government is expected to gain Rs 120 crore annually while through the same cess on cylinder, the government is expected to earn an additional Rs 83 crore every year.
After chairing a meeting of the cow cabinet, formed on November 20, CM Chouhan invoked ‘Indian culture’ to explain the rationale behind the likely move to impose the ‘gaumata’ tax.
