Republic TV Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami was released from Taloja Jail in Mumbai on Wednesday evening hours after the Supreme Court granted him and two others interim bail in connection with the 2018 abetment to suicide case.

In its directions, the Supreme court has asked Goswami to execute a personal bond of Rs 50,000 for release on interim bail.

Supreme Court also ordered Raigad Police to release Goswami on immediate basis. The top court also allowed the interim release of the co-accused Neetish Sarda and Firoze Mohammed Sheikh in the case.

The case was fought by Senior Advocate Harish Salve representing Arnab Goswami and Advocate Kapil Sibal representing the Maharashtra Government.

The bench hearing the matter consisted of Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice Indira Banerjee. The judges observed that it will be a travesty of justice if bail is not granted while FIR is pending.

Upon hearing the matter, the apex court pointed out that the High Court was in error in rejecting the application for grant of interim bail.

In the matter, Justice Chandrachud also said, “The individual role of accused is not made out and no prima facie case under Section 306 IPC is made out to justify the arrest of the accused.”

Some of the observations made by the Supreme Court in the case are as follows:

  1. If left to me, I do not watch the channel and you may differ in ideology, but if constitutional courts do not interfere today, we are travelling the path of destruction undeniably.

  2. Our democracy is extraordinarily resilient. Point is, governments should ignore them (taunts on TV). This is not the basis on which elections are fought. You (Maharashtra) think what they say makes any difference in the elections?
  3. We must send a message today to the high courts as well. Please exercise your jurisdiction to uphold personal liberty.

Republic Media Editor in chief Arnab Goswami was arrested on November 4 and has been under judicial custody since then in a case relating to abetment to suicide of interior designer Anvay Naik since then.
