COVID-19 | Top 10 global developments this Saturday morning

The number of people infected with the novel coronavirus so far across the world climbed to 39.26 million while the death toll from the disease surged to 1,103,509, according to the Johns Hopkins University. However, 27.01 million people have been recovered from the virus.

Here are the top 10 global developments this morning: 

1. The United States has surpassed 8 million cases, according to Johns Hopkins University. The US has confirmed at least 8,008,402 cases of coronavirus since March this year.

2. The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in Germany has increased by 7,830 to 348,557, according to data from the Robert Koch Institute for infectious diseases. While the death toll rose by 33 to 9,734.

3. In France, the health ministry has reported 25,086 new confirmed cases in the past 24 hours, Reuters reported. The new figure follows a record of 30,621 infections on Thursday.

4. Brazil has registered 754 further coronavirus deaths over the last 24 hours and 30,914 new confirmed cases, the nation’s health ministry said on Friday.

5. Italy, which was hammered by COVID-19 in the early stages of the pandemic, is struggling again as the country has recorded 10,010 new cases in the last 24 hours.

6. South Africa has now surpassed 700,000 cases since early March, and fears an impending second wave amid the nation’s economic recession. About 2,019 new cases were detected on Friday.

7. India reported a spike of 62,212 new COVID-19 cases and 837 deaths in the last 24 hours, taking the total case tally to 74,32,681.

8. In Australia, New South Wales has reported five new cases of locally transmitted Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, all linked to the Oran Park area in south-west Sydney. The total number of cases in NSW is now 4,144.

9. Belgium is planning a four-week closure of all cafes and restaurants to tackle a sharp rise in cases, following a meeting of the Belgian government’s crisis unit.

10. China has recorded 13 new coronavirus cases in the mainland, compared with 24 cases a day earlier, Reuters reported.
