Rahul Gandhi detained by UP Police on his way to Hathras

Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra have been detained by the Uttar Pradesh Police on their way to Hathras on Thursday to meet the family of the woman who died after being gang-raped, and whose cremation in the night by the police has provoked nationwide outrage.

The brother-sister duo was stopped by UP Police on Yamuna expressway, following that both the leaders started marching toward Hathras on foot. There was massive traffic congestion at the expressway.

Meanwhile, ahead of their visit, Section 144 has been imposed in the city. Hathras DM P Lakshkar said: “Borders of Hathras are sealed. Section 144 of CrPC has been imposed in the district, more than 5 people are not allowed to gather. We’ve no information about Priyanka Gandhi’s visit. SIT will meet the victim’s family members today, media will not be allowed.”

Besides, BSP chief Mayawati asked the Centre to step in as she alleged that Yogi Adityanath’s UP government had failed to curb crime against women.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi slammed BJP government over “jungle raj” in Uttar Pradesh. He said that BJP’s slogan is not to save girls but to hide facts and save power.

Hathras Gangrape Case:

The death of a 19-year-old woman, who was brutally gang-raped in a village in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras district two weeks ago, has triggered a nationwide uproar with protests and calls for justice.

The last rites of Hathras gang-rape victim were performed at her native place here in the wee hours of Wednesday. The victim died on Tuesday morning, at Safdarjung hospital in Delhi. All the four accused involved in the incident on September 14 have been arrested.
