With the unholy nexus between Bollywood and drugs coming to the fore courtesy the investigations in the Sushant Singh Rajput case, the call to weed out the drug menace is growing louder by the minute.
Though the spotlight this time is on Bollywood biggies courtesy the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), many celebs across the globe in the past have either been caught with or confessed to consuming drugs.
While new revelations and big names involved in drugs keep coming out with every passing day, here’s a list of celebrities who have had encounters of substance abuse, arrests and rehab:
On September 8, Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) arrested Jalebi star Rhea Chakraborty and her brother Showik Chakraborty in a drugs-related case filed by the NCB, as part of the investigation into Sushant Singh Rajput’s death.
Rhea was in a relationship with Rajput at the time of his death on 14 June, when he was found hanging from the ceiling fan in his Bandra flat in Mumbai.
She has been booked under the National Drugs & Psychotropic Substances Act for alleged drug possession and consumption.
One of the most high-profile cases of a Bollywood actor being arrested for drugs possession was that of Sanjay Dutt.
In 1982, Dutt was arrested in a drug case and was sentenced to a 5-month jail term, following which his father – actor turned politician Sunil Dutt, sent him to a rehabilitation center in the US.
Actor Fardeen Khan, in 2001, had been arrested by NCB from Juhu in Mumbai on charges of possessing cocaine, according to a HT report.
The special court had granted him immunity from prosecution in February 2012 after he went through a de-addiction process.
The actor’s video had surfaced, where the 33-year-old claimed she was an addict when she had initially entered the film industry. ”Soon as I ran away from my house, I became a film star in a couple of years and a drug addict,” she is seen saying.

Ranaut had claimed recently that 99 per cent of Bollywood celebs indulge in drugs. She had also taken to Twitter and written, ”I request Ranveer Singh, Ranbir Kapoor, Ayan Mukerji, Vicky Kaushik to give their blood samples for drug test, there are rumours that they are cocaine addicts, I want them to bust these rumours, these young men can inspire millions if they present clean samples.”

Yo Yo Honey Singh

According to media reports when he opened up about his condition, he was quoted as saying: ”I must confess that I was bipolar and an alcoholic.”
Robert Downey Jr
Marvel superhero ‘Tony Stark’ aka ‘Iron Man’ from 1996 through 2001 was arrested multiple times for the possession and consumption of drugs — heroine, cocaine and marijuana.
However, his is a real-life story one could take inspiration and motivation from. After five years of substance abuse, arrests, rehab, Downey, who made a comeback to films, is now one of the highest-paid actors in Hollywood.
Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey was arrested in 1999 and booked on suspicion of possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and resisting transportation.
The actor spent around nine hours in jail before being released with a USD 1,000 bond. Reports stated that the drug charges against him were later dropped.
Rapper Snoop Dogg was banned from entering Norway when he was caught trying to bring eight grams of marijuana through the airport.
Meanwhile, in Sweden, the star was arrested after the police pulled his car over and tested him for narcotics. Although he denied taking drugs, his test came back positive with findings showing the “highest measurable value” of narcotics.
