Fact Check: Viral posts comparing India’s GDP with other nations present misleading data

Multiple posts have been doing the rounds on social media, showing the GDP growth numbers for April-June 2020 for various nations of the world. India’s GDP growth has been claimed in these posts to be at -23.9% in Q1 FY 2021.

The caption reads: “GDP growth in April – June 2020
Japan down by -7.6%
US down by -9.5%
Germany down by -10.1%
Canada down by -12%
France down by -13.8%
UK down by -20.4%
India down by -23.9%
And China increased by 3.2%
Seems like India had an excess of ” Act of God”

FACT CHECK

While the image of PM Narendra Modi, has been depicted in a satirical context and is clearly visible to be morphed, it is the growth numbers that have been reported wrong.

We found that the same GDP growth figures were also mentioned in media reports such as the one by India Today from August 31, 2020.

We checked these numbers against numbers from the International Monetary Fund – which is the global authority on financial and economic metrics. We checked the Twitter account of IMF’s chief economist Gita Gopinath, who had tweeted a graph of the actual GDP growth for the same time period.

As per her tweet, the numbers are:

India: -25.6%
Japan:-7.8%
Canada:-11.5%
USA: -9.1%
China: 12.3%
UK:-20.4%

Hence, the GDP growth numbers reported in the claims are false.
