NewsMobile impact: Gurugram Coffee Shop fined, tenders public apology on COVID-19 violations and lying

A day after NewsMobile exposed how Bob’sXSocal, a Coffee Shop in Nirvana Courtyard market of Sector 50 in Gurugram, was brazenly flouting COVID-19 precautionary measures as mandated by the government. After examining the evidence the Gurgaon police fined the owner of the Coffee shop Utsav Batra. Batra also apologised for his false claims and misleading posts on social media, and for not adhering to Covid 19 norms in his establishment.

The coffee shop had got down to a slander campaign against NewsMobile Team including Editor-in-Chief Saurabh Shukla, following the expose.

“On Behalf of BOB’s X SOCAL nirvana courtyard, Sector 50 Gurgaon, I Utsav Batra unconditionally apologise to Mr Shukla and Newsmobile Team and the residents of Nirvana country and our patrons for not abiding by the COVID-19 norms of wearing masks on August 21, 2020,” the apology read.

Apologizing for the comments he made against NewsMobile on social media, Batra also said, “I apologise for the unfounded comments and personal attacks I made on Instagram and on social media which were not true. And I am sorry for my conduct.” He further added, “I also apologise for the personal slander over social media against the journalist. We have been fined by the authorities for this lapse and we will not repeat in the future.”

Utsav Batra also announced an undertaking in his public apology, “I undertake that I will ensure complete compliance and precautions as laid down by the government guidelines to prevent COVID-19. We committed a mistake and we are thankful to team NewsMobile for pointing it out.”

Despite best efforts made by Gurugram administration to ensure masks and social distancing norms are followed by all to prevent the spread of COVID-19, some eateries are rampantly violating norms and being brazen about it. Such acts of ignorance can only lead to a larger spread of the pandemic.

Tipped off by an alert citizen, when NewsMobile went in to Bob’sXSocal in Nirvana Courtyard market in Sector 50, we found that there were groups of patrons not wearing any masks or adhering to social distancing norms. When we checked with the store owner, Utsav Batra, who also had his mask down, he told us that, “We can’t do anything and we can’t be in there and do what you want.”

Other shops in the vicinity told us that the coffee shop has been blatantly violating norms and is exposing its customers and other shoppers and residents of the area to the risk of COVID-19. We were told that the owner has a clout hence no action has been taken so far. We were also told that the coffee shop is opening another restaurant, CIBO, very soon.

Other store owners and local residents told NewsMobile that the callous attitude of some of these establishments can lead to them becoming COVID-19 spreaders. They wanted stringent action to be taken to set an example.

After NewsMobile’s reality check, BOB’s X SOCAL was fined and the coffee shop owner was prompted to make a public apology as well.

Gurugram administration, Municipal Corporation and police have done a commendable job in checking the spread of COVID- 19 so far but unless action is taken against such errant food establishments the pandemic can spread dangerously.

NewsMobile stands committed, in the larger public interest, to support the Government and our COVID-19 warriors to stop the spread of this menacing virus. If you find any establishment violating these norms please email us on and we will get a reality check done.
