The Haryana government on Friday announced that all offices and shops will remain closed in the state every Saturday and Sunday due to the COVID-19 pandemic. State Health Minister Anil Vij said that shops selling essential items will be exempted from the order.

The announcement came as Haryana recorded its highest single-day spike of 996 coronavirus cases on Thursday. The total number of COVID-19 cases in the northern state stands at 50,926, with 578 fatalities.

Haryana announced the curbs a day after Punjab government issued a series of emergency directives, including extending weekend lockdown with daily night curfew from 7 pm to 5 am in all 167 cities/towns across the state.
