Facebook hate speech row which has had Congress and BJP trading charges against each other exploded into a no holds barred attack on Tuesday with union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad slamming interim Congress President Sonia Gandhi and MP Rahul Gandhi for instigating hate speeches.

Addressing a press conference, Prasad said, “Let Facebook decide what it has to say regarding the piece published in Wall Street Journal as per its policy. As far as we are concerned, if it is a public platform, every India irrespective of his or her ideology or commitment has the right to convey his or her views. It is a hard fact that we need to know that people whose political base has shrunk like anything, seek to dominate public discourse on these platforms.”

Pointing the accusing finger on Sonia and Rahul, he said, “Sonia Gandhi had said this will be aar-paar ki ladai hogi (this will be a do or die battle). Is this hate speech or not? Rahul Gandhi during a public rally had said people of the country with rain sticks on the Prime Minister. Isn’t this hate speech? It is a text book case of instigation for violence. Rahul Gandhi feels that anyone who is not aligned to his ideology, works for Sangh and RSS.”

Congress on Tuesday asked Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg to probe allegations that the social media company’s India team was biased towards BJP.

In a letter to Zuckerberg, Congress’ general secretary (organisation) KC Venugopal said, “As India’s oldest political party that fought for the nation’s freedom and established electoral democracy through adult franchise, it is deeply disturbing to note that your company may be a willing participant in thwarting the very rights and values that our founding leaders sacrificed their lives for.”

Facebook India Policy Head Ankhi Das had registered a complaint with Delhi Police after she started receiving threat messages. Delhi Police has already begun probe with regards to her complaint.
