Former Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir G C Murmu has been appointed as the country’s Comptroller and Auditor General a day after he resigned as Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir. He will succeed Rajiv Mehrishi who retires today. The CAG is a constitutional authority and is an important one as the previous CAG Vinod Rai has headed a report which blew the lid of the 2G scam in which former telecom minister A Raja was accused of irregularities on the allotment of 2G spectrum.

A 1985-batch Gujarat cadre officer, Mr. Murmu had worked PM Modi when he was the Gujarat Chief Minister. Later he joined the Union Finance Ministry when the Modi government came to power at the center. He became part of the expenditure department as a joint secretary.

The opposition Congress party has raised questions about whether the resignation of the first Lieutenant-Governor of Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir Girish Chandra Murmu was voluntary or he was instructed to do so. Irrespective, he will take oath on Saturday.
