Fact Check: The truth behind the photo of some people burning the BJP flag

A picture of a few people burning BJP flag is doing rounds on social media with the claim that those who are burning the flag belong to the Brahmin community.

“ब्राह्मणों ने #जलाया “भाजपा” का झंडा…जय जय परशुराम‼️” the caption read.

(English translation: Brahmins have burnt BJP flag…Jay Jay Parshuram)

NewsMobile fact-checked the above post and found the claim to be false.

We put the picture through Reverse Image Search and came across a YouTube video, dated November 21, 2018.

The video was captioned with the title ‘भाजपा से बागी हुए हंसराज पटेल के समर्थकों द्वारा BJP पार्टी के बैनर झंडे जलाए’ and it was geo tagged to Kotputli, Rajsthan.

(Translation: Supporters of BJP rebel Hansraj Patel burn BJP’s party flags)

A similar video was also uploaded by ETV Bharat Rajasthan.

According to the above video, Hansraj’s supporters were angry after he was denied a ticket for the elections in Rajasthan Assembly elections.

When we compared the viral picture to the keyframes of the YouTube video, we found the video and the picture are from the same location and featured the same set of people.

We ran a keyword search and also found a similar report by Danik Baskar.

However, the article is unavailable but we were able to trace the Google cached preview using Cached View.

In conclusion, we can say that an old picture has been revived and is being shared with a false narrative.
