Moderna vaccine set for final phase trials; US govt increases investment

The final phase trial of the coronavirus vaccine being produced by US-based pharmaceutical, Moderna. Inc has begun today. The phase-III trial will include about 30,000 participants in it.

Today in the third and most critical phase of the vaccine trial, half of the 30,000 participants will receive a 100-microgram dose of the vaccine, while the other half set will receive a placebo of the vaccine ( does not contain the active substance.)

After this, globally, there will be around 4 vaccines that are in the final stages of clinical trials. Along with Moderna, AstraZeneca, and two other Chinese firms are in the fray.

Earlier on Sunday, the United States government had doubled its investment in Moderna vaccines. The state administration’s investment had risen to 1 billion dollars.

The Trump government has done so to accelerate the development of the vaccine so that they can try to control the increasing brutality of the COVID 19 cases in the country and to get Americans vaccinated as soon as possible.

Moderna in a statement on Sunday said that the US government has planned to spend an additional amount of $472 million on the vaccine, adding on to the earlier amount of $483 already announced.

Before this, the US government also extended investment of $1.95 billion in the vaccine being manufactured by the American- German firms Pfizer and BioNTech. The US government procured a pre-order of 100 million doses of the vaccine.

Apart from this, on the vaccine front, the US billionaire Bill Gates has said on Sunday that a South Korean firm backed by him, called SK Bioscience, may be able to develop 200 million vaccine kits by June next year. He is keen to work in collaboration with the South Korean government on this.

The United States has remained on the top of severely affected countries, the coronavirus tally is only seeing an upward surge in the state. More than 1,46,000 coronavirus deaths have been observed in the country.
