EC: Amended rules allowing postal ballot for COVID-19 patients released by Law Ministry

The Law Ministry has issued a notification listing out amended rules for upcoming Bihar elections this year. As per the notification, issued on June 23, clearance was given for postal ballots to COVID-19 patients, people aged above 65 years and people under institutional or home quarantine.

The Election Commission had approached the Ministry of Law for the same as earlier only people with disabilities and those above 80 years of age could avail postal ballot facility for which they had to fill Form 12D.

Bihar elections would be the first of its kind as it would be the first state to vote post the coronavirus outbreak. Nearly 7.2 crore voters will cast their franchise to elect the next government since Nitish Kumar’s term expires on Novermber 29.
