The death of a father and son in police custody in Tamil Nadu’s Tuticorin following allegations of torture and gruesome sexual assault has sparked outrage and major political row across the state.
The two deceased, identified as 59-year-old Jayaraj and his 31-year-old J Bennix, were allegedly brutally beaten up by the cops after being arrested for allegedly violating lockdown by keeping their mobile phone shop in Tuticorin open beyond permitted hours last Friday (June 19).
After their condition deteriorated, the father-son were rushed to the government medical facility. Jayaraj died on June 22, whereas, his son succumbed to the injuries on June 23.

DMK MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi has written to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) over the alleged custodial of the father-son duo. She urged the NHRC to investigate and initiate necessary action against the officials responsible for the incident.
“The father and his son were killed by police in lockup at Sathankulam. DMK leader MK Stalin gave Rs 25 lakh to the family and DMK is ready to support the family in the legal aid and we assured the family our full support,” she said.
Chief Minister EK Palaniswami condoled the deaths but was silent on the alleged torture. He has announced Rs 10 lakh as compensation and a job for the family. The case has been taken up by the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court.
