Delhi‘s rising COVID tally; ahead of Egypt, Netherlands & many other countries

Date:

The coronavirus cases in Delhi witnessed the highest single-day spike of cases, making the capital have the second-highest positive cases in the country. It has now overtaken Tamil Nadu. In another grim milestone as many as 3,788 new coronavirus cases were reported in the last 24 hours, which sums the total up to 70,000-mark, which it has now breached.

The only silver lining is that the number of recovered patients (39,313) is much higher than the active patients (24,988) in the capital. With 2,301 deaths, the toll in Delhi alone has surpassed the numbers of many countries across the globe.

As per data from John Hopkin University, COVID resource Center, Delhi with a land area of 1,484 km² and a population of 16.8 million people (according to 2011 census) has overtaken many bigger countries in terms of the COVID-19 positive numbers.

From Europe to Arab countries, Delhi numbers have outgrown many countries globally. On Wednesday, June 24, Iraq reported 34,502 confirmed corona positive cases and the United Arab Emirates has 45,683 cases, with a total population of 39.4 million and 9.2 million respectively. Israel on the other hand also has a population of 9.2 million with 21,666 confirmed cases.

Moving to the west Netherlands has 49,772 and Belgium has 60,898 confirmed positive patients with a population of 17 million and 11.4 million respectively. Egypt with the sky-scraping population of 100 million also has fewer cases than Delhi, only 58,141 as of now.

Here’s a graphic representation of the countries that have lesser numbers than Delhi.

Hence, Delhi administration needs to ensure they are going all out to tackle the numbers, they have to ensure stricter implementation of all the guidelines and plan out a different strategy to contain the spread.

Note:- All the figures are taken from John Hopkin University Covid resource centre, however for Delhi, the data has been cross checked with data from the Ministry of Health and family welfare.
