COVID-19 cases in India are spiraling with daily addition of cases topping 10,000. World over countries are struggling under the onslaught of corona virus. More than 8.6 million people have acquired the corona virus around the world and nearly 458,000 people have died as a result of the deadly virus. Healthcare infrastructure is being stretched to its limit.
Our doctors, medical fraternity, government and public help services etc have been working tirelessly to combat and contain the virus. Their relentless work and dedication have given India the edge in the fight against the pandemic.
However, the steep increase in positive cases seems to have exposed the shortcomings of our healthcare infrastructure and its inability to cope with scale of cases being reported. Are hospitals and quarantine centers maintaining hygiene levels for patients? Are they getting the attention they deserve in this critical time? Is good quality care the utmost priority?
NewsMobile spoke to a corona virus patient who is admitted at the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Barpeta, Assam. He narrates his harrowing story of being in a facility with minimal service norms.
Shalam Zeth, through this video, takes us through his ordeal. His toilet has been dysfunctional for days. Despite repeated complaints, no one has come forward to fix it.
This is what Shalam has to say-
1. The quarantine facility has not maintained even basic hygiene.
2. No sort of sanitisation is being carried out by the staff. People have to fend for themselves when it comes to sanitisation.
3. The toilets are in the worst condition imaginable. Again, no cleaning by the staff and the place reeks of foul odour.
4. No pest control. There are mosquitoes and cockroaches everywhere. In addition to that, there are other critters which I can’t even identify.
5. No social distance being enforced inside of quarantine center. People are being made to sleep within 6 inches of each other, even though the globally accepted norm is at least 6 feet.
6. No plug points to charge phones at the center. Although it sounds trivial, people would like to update their concerned family, partner etc.
After four days of stay at the state quarantine facility, the cleaning staff came inside the dormitory to clean. They covered the area outside in bleach.
