Besides hospitals, now ‘Safe Homes’ in Bengal for COVID-19 patients

Date:

As COVID-19 cases continue to see a spike leading to a constant tug-of-war over hospital beds, West Bengal government has come up with a new concept of Safe Homes. These Safe Homes have been earmarked to house COVID-19 patients showing mild symptoms so that they do not rush to hospitals for treatment which could then be kept exclusively for use of critically ill patients.
Announcing the move, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said 104 such Safe Homes have already been identified and if need be the number homes would be augmented further.

“Please do not hide your symptoms. To be infected with the virus is not a crime. These Safe Houses will be there spread all across the state. They are for mild positive patients. The number of such Safe Houses will increase. I am willing to give my house too for the purpose,” Mamata said.

After Centre’s advisory regarding keeping mild symptomatic COVID-19 patients under home isolation, West Bengal government had also advised local hospitals to provide mildly symptomatic patients with home care facilities. However this led to a lot of resistance from the neighbourhood in cases with fears of infection spreading rapidly gaining ground. This prompted the government to come up with the concept of Safe Houses.

To boost the morale of COVID-19 warriors, Mamata also declared incentives for medical students if they choose to serve government hospitals. She also took a dig at the Prime Minister’s meeting with state Chief Ministers. “They are doing big meetings and we are doing our grassroots meeting. They didn’t call us because they don’t need it. Please don’t think Bengal is weak. It’s unfair to think anyone is weak. Today they didn’t call Bengal but tomorrow Bengal might call everyone,” she said.
