137 new COVID cases; Beijing suspends 1200 flights, shuts schools

Date:

With the fear of the second wave of the Coronavirus outbreak, Beijing suspends over 1200 flights and shuts schools again in the state on Wednesday. This came after China’s capital has observed a sudden jump in the coronavirus patients with 31 fresh cases reported on Wednesday. Over 137 new corona cases were discovered in the last 6 days with three asymptomatic persons.

Overlooking the developments, authorities have asked the residents not to leave Beijing fearing the spread of the second wave and had also announced a travel ban on residents of “medium-high” risk areas.

Coincidentally, this outbreak has also erupted in the food wholesale market, a Xinfadi market of Beijing. It is one of the biggest markets in Beijing, which serves around 70%of the capital’s population. Since May 30, over 2,00,000 people have visited the market, officials said. Taking a precautionary measure over 8,000 workers there were tested and quarantined.

Orders to shut 11 markets and disinfect various food and beverage outlets in Beijing were sent out immediately.

Fresh cases were also reported in other domestic areas, one in neighboring Hebei province and another in Zhejiang, while there are 11 imported cases. Authorities on alert have banned group sports and asked people to maintain proper preventive measures.

The fresh outbreak has concerned the authority more because China’s Centre for Disease Control and Prevention on Monday reported that the type of the virus in this wave was of “major epidemic strain” in Europe.

On December 31, 2019 WHO’s (World Health Organization)  China office had filed the first case of previously unknown virus causing pneumonia on a large scale in Wuhan. Later, the origin of the virus was allegedly said to be Wuhan’s animal market. The country had earlier observed 83,265 cases and 4,634 deaths.
