Fact Check: Picture of Korean war shared as Indo-China Nathu La conflict

Date:

Amid the growing tension between the Indian and Chinese troops along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), a picture of some soldiers carrying a distressed man is doing the rounds on social media.

It is being claimed that the picture was taken in 1967 in Nathu La pass in Eastern Sikkim and it shows a Chinese soldier fearing punishment from the Chinese Army for surrendering to the Indian Army.

Historic Photo : 1967 Nathula! Chinese soldier(POW) fearing punishment from #PLA for surrendering, don’t want to go back. Indian Troops returned him after #China lost the conflict and went back into its territory! #LAC #ladhakh tensions will be China’s 1971 #Bangladesh moment!” the caption read.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above picture and found that the claim attached to it is false.

When we put the picture through Reverse Image Search, we came across the original picture on the Getty Images website.

‘Two Indian Soldiers Carrying A Weeping Chinese POW To The Exchange Point In Panmunjom, North Korea’, the caption read.

Further, the description of the photo read, ‘Two Indian soldiers carrying a weeping Chinese prisoner-of-war to the exchange point in Panmunjom, North Korea, for return to the Communists after the Korean War, 5th October 1953. He was among 65 Chinese soldiers who asked to be repatriated to their homeland. (Photo by Bride Lane Library/Popperfoto via Getty Images/Getty Images)’.

Hence, the above information proves that the picture was taken in 1953 in North Korean after the Korean War, not in 1967 in Nathu La pass as claimed by the post.
