Fact Check: Old and unrelated picture of Nepalese woman shared as Indian migrant

Date:

A photo of a woman carrying her child on her backing while cycling is being circulated on different social media sites with a claim that the picture shows the new India.

The caption of the post reads: “न्यू इंडिया का सच”

(Translation- New India’s truth)

The caption suggests that the picture is taken during the migrant crisis in India due to Coronavirus pandemic.

The picture was also tweeted by Congress leader, Randeep Surjewala, but now has been taken down.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the picture and found that it is old and unrelated to the ongoing crisis in the country.

The Press Information Bureau (PIB) in a tweet, explicitly clarified, that it is an old video and not India.

We further tried to uncover the origin of the picture. On putting it through Reverse Image Search, we found it on the European Pressphoto Agency, dated July 3, 2012.

According to the description of the picture, it was taken on June 29, 2012, in Kathmandu, Nepal by a photographer, Narendra Shrestha.

Therefore, we further contacted him on Facebook messenger and he confirmed that the picture was taken by him for the European Pressphoto Agency on July 29, 2012, in Nepalgunj, Nepal.

Hence, our investigation proves that the picture is old and is not related to the ongoing migrant crisis due to COVID-19 in India.
