Antibody that beats COVID-19 created in lab

Date:

Scientists have synthesized a monoclonal antibody in the lab which has proved to be effective in the fight against the deadly coronavirus, Bloomberg has reported.

While the trials look promising, trials on animals and humans are yet to be conducted and it may take some time before a drug made of this hit the market.

The antibody being developed targets the coronavirus. The antibody known as 47D11 targets the spike protein the gives the coronavirus a crown like shape and lets it enter human cells.

In the experiment conducted by the Utrecht University in the Netherlands, the antibody not only defeated the Covid-19 virus but also its cousin which is responsible for certain other respiratory problems such as SARS.

Genetically modified mice were used to test this antibody.

Experts are of the opinion that though it may offer hope, it will be a long while before this receives any regulatory approval for clinical trials and actually releases in the markets.
