Virus will stay for a longer period of time; Africa and South America to be new hotspots: WHO

Date:

World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Wednesday that the virus and its effects will continue to stay longer than expected and that large parts of Africa and South America are emerging as the new hotspots of the virus.

He said that no nation is fully prepared to deal with the virus and no single country has put every mechanism in place.

The WHO Chief also warned of resurgence of the virus in many nations which had earlier flattened the curve.

“Most countries are still in the early stages of their epidemics and some that were affected early in the pandemic are starting to see a resurgence in cases,” he said.

The WHO Director General also decried the decision of the US to withdraw funding and said that the priority of the organization remains stopping the spread of the virus across the world. He denied any sort of wrongdoing.

“Looking back, I think we declared the emergency at the right time and when the world had enough time to respond,” he added.

The WHO separately urged nations to reconsider their decision to restart air travel and said that it would be a dangerous proposition, just when the situation is returning to normalcy.

Independent experts have warned that the virus will continue to stay and the world will have to adopt ways and means which can be permanently altered due to this unexpected emergency.
