COVID-19: Karnataka to partially relax lockdown guidelines, Kerala expecting 5.5 lakh expatriates to return from Gulf

The Union Home Ministry has issued a set of strict guidelines to enforce the lockdown. However, some southern states are looking at providing some form of relaxation to revive their public finances.

Here’s a look at what all is making news in South India this Wednesday evening:

1. Karnataka has decided to partially relax the guidelines and permit certain activities from April 23. Courier services, construction and manufacturing of packaging material will be permitted. However, wine shops and those selling alcohol will remain shut till May 3.

2. Kerala has conveyed to the Centre that it expects an exodus of 5.5 lakh expatriates from the Gulf states into Kerala and the state is preparing to accommodate them.

3. The Mysuru District administration has identified 12 containment zones in the city which are being declared ‘no go zones’. Some of these areas include Meena Bazar, Teachers Layout and JP Nagar among other areas.

4. The Tamil Nadu government has intensified its fight against COVID-19. The state government has decided to embark on a mission to test any individual who displays symptoms related to the virus and enforce stricter conditions in the containment zones.

5. Kalburgi district in Karnataka is facing a massive challenge. According to reports, a positive case is being reported every 19 hours, despite the lockdown.

6. The Central Drug Standards and Control organization has given permission to a group of Doctors from Bengaluru to conduct clinical trials for ‘Plasma Therapy’.

7. The Telangana High Court has ordered an audit of PPE’s and asked all medical superintendents in the state to furnish details of the same.

8. The Tamil Nadu government has decided to invoke the dreaded Goondas Act against those individuals obstructing the funeral processions.

9. IIIT Hyderabad has decided to teach the upcoming semester, completely online.

10. The Puducherry government has announced that it has started the process of accepting applications from industries wanting to resume their activities.
