Fact Check: Old picture of ‘Rath Yatra’ being shared as recent gathering amid lockdown

A picture of people participating in a ‘Rath Yatra’ is being shared on social media with a claim that people in Kalabari district of Karnataka are celebrating this festival despite the lockdown.

“Meeting at the chariot held in #Kalabari district of #Karnataka. Who is to blame for #Corona? Why is the media not releasing it? The #Karnataka_BJP_government has ignored the #central_government’s curfew,” the caption read.

FACT CHECK 

NewsMobile fact-checked the above picture and found that it is old.

On putting the image through Reverse Image Search, we found this picture in an article published in 2017.

According to the Deccan Herald article, the picture is of Gavisiddeshwara Jathre of Gavimath in Koppal. This religious festival is a 15 days affair that begins after the Rathotsava (chariot festival) on the first day.

Also, we ran a search and found that in Kalaburagi District in Karnataka, on April 16, 2020, people gathered in large numbers to participate in a religious festival despite the lockdown.

 

This proves that the picture being shared online is OLD.
