COVID-19: From lifts to masks, MHA issues ‘Work from Office’ guidelines

As India struggles to take small steps towards normalcy from a complete lockdown scenario till now, it isn’t going to be easy for corporates and businesses to restart.
From the time of packed floor plans and work spaces to a new norm of distancing, corporates have a herculean task ahead to ensure that the spread of COVID-19 can be stumped, even as people and workers return to workplaces, albeit with strict guidelines in place.

Addressing the nation about the extended lockdown, PM Modi announced certain relaxations that will be permitted from April 20, onwards. This will be based on careful monitoring of the areas and adherence to guidelines issued by the Home Ministry.

Offices that are allowed to operate and fall within the classification, will have to ensure certain precautions like –
• 6 ft of separation between work desks and personnel.
• Face masks are a must for work from office
• Meetings to have less than 10 people present.
• Staggered lunch breaks as well as shifts with at least an hour’s gap in between.
• IT/ITES offices to work at 50% staff capacity.
• Entry and exit points to be monitored.
• Sanitisation of the area to be done as per guidelines
• Thermal screening to be made mandatory.
• Incase company provide transportation, then vehicles cannot carry more than 30-40% of seating capacity.
• Entry of “non-essential” visitors to be monitored.
• No consumption of tobacco products allowed within the premises.
• Spitting in public place is banned.
• Not more than 2-4 people (depending upon the size) to be allowed in lifts at a time.
• Employees with children below 5 years of age and those employees who are above the age of 65 years, to be allowed to continue work from home.

Apart from this, all essential requirements like Doctor names, hospitals nearby have to be readily made available to all employees on duty. District magistrates will enforce these rules through fines and penal action prescribed in the Disaster Management Act 2005.

The new norm of Work from office is definitely a change for the better. The menace that coronavirus has created across the world, is indeed reason enough to be mindful of these changes. The graded resumption of work issued by the government is in the right direction.
