COVID-19: MHA miffed with states for relaxing conditions related to national lockdown

Date:

A letter written by the Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla on Tuesday to all the Chief Secretaries and Chief Administrators of the States and Union Territories has revealed that the Union government is miffed with the states for relaxing guidelines associated with the national lockdown enforced to fight the deadly Coronavirus.

The National Disaster Management Authority had issued a set of instructions to all states and union territories to implement under the Disaster Management Act, 2005 to fight the spread of the deadly corona virus.

These guidelines permitted the citizens to travel only for procurement of only bare essential items such as provisions and rations, banking services and treatment of emergency medical situations during this period of lockdown.

Some states have not implemented this in letter and spirit and have added their own exceptions to the rules and issued daily passes to their residents.

The Delhi Transport Corporation ran 50% of their fleet which led to a panic situation amongst the migrant community in Delhi. This led to suspension of the Additional Chief Secretary (Transport) and other officers who have been issued show cause notices.

The states have been asked to strengthen their measures to ensure that the lockdown succeeds and the spread of the virus is jettisoned.
