COVID-19: Key takeaways from Union Health Ministry’s briefing

The Union Health Ministry held a briefing on Monday to review the actions taken, preparedness and updates on COVID-19.

Here are the key takeaways:

  1. 92 new cases, including four deaths, have been reported in the last 24 hours, taking total cases to 1,071 and the number of deaths to 29 in India.
  2. Only local transmission has begun, not community transmission: Health Ministry
  3. Coronavirus should be nipped in the bud
  4. In the last three days, 13,034 tests have been done in private labs, said R Ganga Ketkar, ICMR.
  5. Home Secretary on Sunday directed States and UTs to direct District Magistrates & Superintendents of Police to ensure food and shelter for stranded workers and full wages by employers. They were also directed to ensure that landlords don’t ask for rent from labourers, said PS Srivastava, MHA.
  6. Bareilly District Magistrate clarified that some employees took an overzealous step due to ignorance. Required action has been taken against those employees: Lav Aggarwal, Joint Secretary, Union Health Ministry on the viral video of disinfectant being sprayed on migrant workers.
  7. Ministry of Development of Northeastern Region has given its nod to run exclusive cargo flights to supply medical equipment & emergency goods in the Northeast region of the country: Lav Aggrawal, Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare.
