The Iranian Ambassador to India, Ali Chegeni, was summoned by the Ministry of External Affairs on Tuesday and a note of strong protest has been registered regarding the comments made by the Iranian Foreign Minister on Monday.
A note of demarche has been issued to the Ambassador.
The Iranian Foreign Minister had tweeted on Monday condemning the Delhi riots and pointed out that Muslims had been specifically targeted during the riots.

For centuries, Iran has been a friend of India. We urge Indian authorities to ensure the wellbeing of ALL Indians & not let senseless thuggery prevail.

He tweeted saying:
“Iran condemns the wave of organized violence against Indian Muslims. For centuries, Iran has been a friend of India. We urge Indian authorities to ensure the well being of ALL Indians & not let senseless thuggery prevail. Path forward lies in peaceful dialogue and rule of law”.

India and Iran have enjoyed good diplomatic relations but in the recent past, this has come under considerable strain, due to US sanctions and India reducing its oil imports.
Earlier, Iran had also condemned Indian actions in the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
India has strongly refuted these allegations and has rejected all forms of foreign interference, including that from the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the US Congress.
This is an internal matter of India and there is no scope for any sort of foreign interference.
Protests over the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 had triggered riots in North East Delhi and this has claimed about 46 lives till date.
