Coronavirus: Russia seals border with China; trade to continue

The fast spreading Novel Coronavirus has prompted the Russian authorities to stop the passenger traffic to and from China on Thursday. However, this will not cover the movement of goods.

The land border of almost 4029 kms has been shut after Kremlin decided to initiate steps to curb the spread of the deadly virus.

Russian Railways has stopped its services to China except on the Moscow-Beijing line will continue to operate.

A decision on flight services will be taken on Friday.

The Russian Foreign Ministry on Thursday, warned Russians against all non-essential travel to China and has indicated that it is slowing down the process of issuing visas to Chinese travellers.

Russian receives its greatest number of tourists from China.

China is Russia’s largest trading partner and hence the movement of goods will continue move forth.

The trade between the two countries is more than US $100 bn.

The trade is also mostly energy supplies which are being transported through cross border pipelines.

Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin said: “As of now, not a single case of this dangerous disease has been conformed. Still we must protect our people”.

This statement after be chaired a high level meeting with the government officials over the outbreak of this disease.
