In the wake of the recent Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019 (CAA) protests across the country, a video has gone viral on social media with a claim that Muslims are being mistreated at detention camps in Assam.

The caption on the video read: “Muslims are in detention camps in Assam. May Allah protect all of them – Ameen Ya Rab.”

Team NewsMobile fact-checked the above video and found the claim attached to it to be FALSE.

After extracting keyframes of the video through InVid, we ran a Reverse Image Search that leads us to an Asia Times article from January 17, 2019, carrying a screenshot of the viral video.

According to the article, the CCTV footage showed prisoners being chased from their cell blocks to open ground in the prison complex. The footage shows inmates being continuously hit by long batons, kicked and thrown to the ground. by prison officials in a Sri Lankan prison in Angunakolapelessa.

In conclusion, the video is not of any detention camp in Assam but from a Sri Lankan jail.
