Fact Check: This woman in the viral picture is not a JNU student

Date:

A picture of an injured girl is being shared on social media with a text implying that she is a JNU Student who has been brutally beaten by the Modi government during the ongoing protests over hostel fees hike.

“JNU छात्रो को मोदी सरकार द्वारा बर्बरतापूर्वक पीटना छिक्कार है” the text read.

FACT CHECK

When NewsMobile fact-checked the picture, we found the claim to be fake.

On putting the image through Google Reverse Image Search, we found an article by Jafariya News dated February 20, 2005.

According to the article, the picture is from Lebanon as the Shia Muslims observe Ashura, the 10th day of Muharram.

We also found a blogpost that features the image title, ‘Pictures of Matam’.

The above information proves that the picture is not of a JNU Student and hence the posts are false.
