PM Modi meets his Thai Counterpart on the side lines of the Indo-ASEAN summit; enhanced trade, connectivity main issues discussed

PM Narendra Modi met his Thai Counterpart PM General (retd) Prayut Chan-o-Cha on the side lines of the 35th ASEAN summit, 14th East Asia Summit and the 16th Indo-ASEAN summit on Sunday.

The two leaders discussed the progress made in the bilateral relations between the two countries and expressed satisfaction that high level visits have yielded positive results. The security and defence relationship is growing.

 

The two sides also welcomed the 20% growth in bilateral trade last year and have tasked officials from both the nations to review trade and investments and increase them further.

Issue of connectivity is integral to both the nations, both physical and digital connectivity. In this regard, Guwahati in Assam and Bangkok have recently been connected by air. An agreement for cooperation between the Rangong port and the ports of Kolkata, Chennai and Vishakapatnam has been finalized.

Other regional and international issues were discussed between the two sides. Thailand continues to remain an important partner of India and is critical to its ‘Act East policy’.

Many connectivity projects such as the India-Myanmar-Thailand trilateral highway are nearing completion and is expected to increase connectivity and boost the development of North East India.
