If the cherry blossom season is what you thought you missed this year in Japan, DC or in Paris, then you have reason to rejoice. Meghalaya’s capital, Shillong, is all set to host the 4th India International Cherry Blossom Festival 2019.
The cherry blossoms, or Prunus cerasoides, span across the east and west Khasi Hills. The bloom marks the beginning of autumn in northeast India.
The mountain city will celebrate the unique autumn flowering of Himalayan Cherry Blossoms with several cultural events from the 13-16 of November. The festival takes place in Shillong and is spread across five venues: Polo Fifth Ground, State Convention Centre, Golf Course, JN Stadium, Indoor Stadium Polo.
A vast array of events ranging from fashion shows, rock concerts, a beauty pageant and even an amateur Golf Tournament, are on the plan.
Along with this, a tempting display of regional specialities, food, wine and crafts will be available. The Republic of Korea is a partner country and there will be several Korean events including a pop concert.
The experience promises to be like any other elsewhere. Pretty-in-pink blooms keep one enthralled with their beauty. Apart from the events, one can also take a walk under the beautifully lit up cherry blossom trees in the night sky and enjoy a fine dining experience at Ward’s Lake.
Also, on the agenda are interesting bicycle rallies, taekwondo demonstrations and storytelling sessions. A cherry blossom photography competition is also another highlight. Photos, both old and new, will be accepted.
Getting there: You can fly to Shillong from some major cities in India, via Kolkata. Alternatively, fly into Guwahati and drive 3 hrs to Shillong.
So, lan your holiday, pack your bags and leave the rest on the beautiful idyllic landscape that Meghalaya promises, with an extra dose of cherry blossoms.
