Fact Checked: No, brother and sister from New Jersey did not win the right to marry each other

A post is being shared on social media claiming that a brother and sister from New Jersey have been allowed to marry after a 10-year-long court battle.

“The United States supreme court has ruled that a brother and sister can now get married. A new jersey brother and sister have won the right to marry after a landmark ruling by the supreme court of the United States, ” the text read accompanied by the picture of a man and women.

FACT CHECK

When NewsMobile fact-checked the post, we found it to be a work of fiction.

When we ran a Google search with the keywords, we found that this story was originally published by World News Daily Report on August 6, 2019. The title read ‘New Jersey brother and sister allowed to marry after 10-year-long court battle.’

However, when we scrolled further we found a declaration at the end of the page clarifying that the website is satirical and all the content is fictional. “World News Daily Report assumes all responsibility for the satirical nature of its articles and for the fictional nature of their content. All characters appearing in the articles in this website – even those based on real people – are entirely fictional and any resemblance between them and any person, living, dead or undead, is purely a miracle, ” the statement read.


When we ran a Reverse Image Search of the picture used in the article, we found that they are a British heterosexual couple who won the court ruling for in the fight for civil partnership.
