Fact Checked: Is Parle-G manufacturer lying about the laying off 10,000 workers?

A post has started trending on social media with a claim that popular biscuit maker Parle is lying about laying off its 10,000 workers.

Parle recently announced that it may have to let go of 8,000-10,000 people due to consumption slowdown.

Following the news, the post stared trending on social media with a screenshot of a document claiming that they only have 4480 employees. So, they are lying about the layoff.

The post was shared extensively on Facebook.

When NewsMobile Fact-checked the viral post, we found the truth about it.

On close inspection of the document shared in the post, we found that it is the annual report of Britannia Industries Limited and not of Parle products. On the top left corner of the document, the name of the company can be read clearly.

We checked the official website of Britannia and found their annual report for 2018-2019.

As for the screenshot of an article by Business Line, the article was published on March 11, 2019.

In a report published by Economic Times on August 21, 2019, Mayank Shah, category head of Parle Products is quoted as saying, ” We have sought reduction in the goods and services tax (GST) on biscuits priced at Rs 100 per kg or below, which are typically sold in packs of Rs 5 and below, but if the government doesn’t provide that stimulus, then we have no choice but to let go of 8,000-10,000 people from our workforce across factories as slowing sales are severely impacting us.”

According to the article, Parle Products employs 1 lakh people and operates 10 company-owned plants, in addition to 125 third party manufacturing facilities.

This proves that information shared in the post is not correct and hence is misleading.
