SC to hear Unnao rape victim’s letter on Thursday; says letter wasn’t placed before CJI

Date:

Even as the Unnao rape case victim battles for her life in the intensive care unit of King George’s Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow, the Supreme Court has taken cognizance of a letter that she had written to the CJI, in which she has alleged a threat to her life.

A bench led by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi will take up the matter on Thursday along with a report from the SC registry on the reason for the delay in placing it before the CJI.

The 19-year-old woman was critically injured in an accident on Sunday. Two of her relatives passed away in the same accident near Rae Bareli. Surprisingly, the security provided to her were not with her that day. The family has accused BJP lawmaker Kuldeep Singh Sengar, the main accused in the rape case, of engineering the accident.

“The letter has not been placed before me and newspapers flashed that CJI did not act,” Justice Gogoi said.
In the letter to the CJI, the rape survivor, has alleged that some people had asked her to take back the case and threatened her. “People came to my house and threatened to take back cases, otherwise whole family will be put in jail in fake cases,” states the letter that was written on July 12.

The opposition parties have also come down heavily on the UP government to take immediate action in this case. The case has been transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The agency registered a FIR against Sengar and 10 others on Wednesday.

The UP police have now booked Sengar and his brother for murder, attempted murder and conspiracy.

The incident dates back to 2017, when he allegedly raped the girl at his residence.
