An 82-year-old dhoti-clad man was refused entry into a Kanpur-New Delhi Shatabdi express on Thursday morning, despite having confirmed tickets.
The victim, Ram Awadh Das accused the Government Railway Police (GRP) of discrimination based on his choice of clothing. However, he did refrain from mentioning the alleged discrimination in the written complaint to the North Central Railways (NCR).
Ram Das said in a statement, “I am shocked. It seems as if we are still living in the British era. Though I had the ticket, still the GRP personnel and the coach attendant denied me entry into the train as I was dressed differently. I am aghast and pained at their behaviour…They said ‘Baba tum galat train mein chadh gaye ho (you have stepped into a wrong train). Your train is in Kanpur and will reach Etawah in next couple of hours’ “.
Ajit Kumar Singh, Chief public relation officer of the NCR clarified accusations saying that as per the inquiry made the elderly passenger has wrongly boarded the power car and was asked to board another coach. Since the train had a two-minute stop at the Etawah station, it left by the time he managed to reach the other coach. Yet, Singh did agree to the irresponsibility on the part of the railway authorities on duty, and has counseled the staff at the station to behave in a proper manner towards elderly passengers.
