Election Commission: No objection with the release date of Modi biopic

Date:

The Election Commission (EC) is unlikely to intervene in the release of the biopic on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The objection was made by the Opposition for alleged violation of the code of conduct. The Opposition and Left parties have said that the release on April 5 will influence voters before elections.

Hitesh Jain, the lawyer for the producers, told a daily on Wednesday that the certification for the biopic was in process as of now.

The Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Ministry has sought time until April 5 to respond to the EC’s letter seeking comments on complaints by the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party against Namo TV. Namo TV is a new channel that shows PM’s speeches and rallies.

The Congress wants that the release of the film should be deferred till the last phase of voting in Lok Sabha polls. Earlier the EC had written to the film’s producers and the ruling party BJP seeking their comments on the complaint. The producers responded on March 28 that they had no links with BJP they were self-funded.

The debate has been between whether this is a violation of the Model Code of Conduct or curbing the freedom of expression if the film’s release is deferred.

Actor Vivek Oberoi who is portraying the role of Modi also took pot-shots at Congress and its leaders and said that they were ‘scared of the chowkidar’s danda’. Responding to the jibe, the Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said it was a “bogus film of a flop hero”.

Filmmaker Omung Kumar’s PM Modi biopic has generated much interest. A two-and-half minute trailer had over a million views shortly after it emerged online. The film traces the PM’s journey from his teens to the country’s top job.
