In a tragic accident, six members of a family, including two minor girls, drowned after their car fell into Parambikulam-Aliyar-Project canal in Coimbatore on Wednesday.
The accident occurred around 1:30 am, when the family, hailing from Masakalipalayam in the city, was returning after visiting the Palani hill shrine. The car plunged into the canal at Kedimedu, after the driver lost control of the sedan.

The police said that all the deceased were related to each other, and belonged to Masakalipalayam in Coimbatore.
The deceased have been identified as R. Prakash (45), a cable operator, his wife P. Chitra (40), their daughter Pooja (8), Prakash’s sister Sumathi (50), Prakash’s sister in law P. Latha (42) and her child Dharani (9).
Soon after receiving reports of the incident, fire and rescue services personnel rushed to the spot. The vehicle was pulled out by the Fire and Rescue Services personnel and the police around 6.30 a.m. All six persons were found dead in the car.
The bodies of the deceased have been shifted to Pollachi General Hospital. The police have started an investigation into the cause of the accident.
