Pak intelligence had used JeM to carry out attacks in India during my tenure: Pervez Musharraf

Date:

New Delhi: Amid rising tension between Indian and Pakistan, former Pak President Pervez Musharraf claimed that the Jaish-e-Mohammed was a terror outfit and indicated that his Pakistan’s intelligence had used it to carry out attacks in India during his tenure.

Musharraf made these revelations during a telephonic interview to Pakistani channel Hum News.

In the interview, Pervez Musharraf welcomed the action against the Jaish-e-Mohammed, saying it had tried to assassinate him twice in December 2003.

“This is a good move. I have always said that the JeM is a terrorist organisation and they only had carried out a suicide attack in an attempt to assassinate me. Action should be taken against them. I am happy the government is taking a tough stand against them,” he said.

When he was asked why he had not taken action against the organisation during his stint in power (1999-2008), he replied saying that those times were ‘different’.

Amid all this, not much action was taken against the JeM, he said, adding that he had also not insisted.

The JeM, led by Masood Azhar, is accused of various attacks in India, including the February 14 Pulwama attack which left over 40 Central Reserve Police Force soldiers dead.
