Farmers call off stir after assurance by Maharashtra government

Date:

Maharashtra: After deliberations that lasted over 6 hours, farmers under the banner of All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) called off their agitation on Thursday. This step was taken after the Maharashtra government assured that their demands would be met.

The march was underway on its first day on Thursday and was called off after the farmers had walked for 13 km. The farmers were demanding complete waiver of farm loans and implementation of Swaminathan Commission recommendations among others.

The meeting was held between the Water Resource Minister Girish Mahajan and the leader of AIKS and it was decided post negotiations that the government would fulfill their demands within 2 to 3 months.

The demands included withdrawing of cases registered against farmers during farmers’ protests, providing land to tribals for farming, and provision of Arabian Sea to them with irrigation for agriculture.

Minister Girish Mahajan, said in a statement the government had agreed to all the demands of the farmers. “We have addressed all of their concerns. We have requested them to withdraw the march so that poor farmers don’t have to walk for 200 km in this weather. They have obliged and we are thankful to them.”

On Wednesday, the farmers started marching from Nashik towards the state Legislative Assembly in Mumbai.

Earlier in March 2018, All India Kisan Sabha had organized a protest march with over 30,000 farmers, from Nashik to Mumbai.
